TRIBUTES have been paid to renowned Limerick poet Desmond O’Grady who has passed away at the age of 78.
Mr O’Grady was born in the city, and spent the bulk of his adult life teaching and writing in Paris, Rome and the USA.
The Aosdána member became a teaching fellow at Harvard University, and also taught in Cairo, Egypt.
He spent the last 25 years of his life living in Kinsale, where his funeral will take place later this week.
President Michael D Higgins led the tributes, saying: “Desmond O’Grady was deeply committed to his work as a poet which had rightly received international attention.
“From wherever he was writing, be it Cairo or Kinsale, his work invoked a sense of what was Irish in both heritage and contemporary life.”
