FROM Donegal to Limerick, Niall McDermott is settling in well to his new role as head coach of the Limerick Sport Eagles National League basketball side who get their season underway this evening with a trip to Galway take on Moycullen in their opener in University of Galway Kinfisher court at 7:30pm.
McDermott has already seen the potential of this Eagles side after observing them from the vice coach position last year. As legend of the club Matt Hall stepped away from the the head coaching role this year after five years at the helm it made sense for the Donegal man to step up and take over the position.
Speaking about his new role in the club Niall stated: "I'm really enjoying it so far. We have a very young team with a lot of guys coming through the ranks, possibly playing their first year of National League this season and nothing can prepare for playing at the level until you take the step up.
"We are lucky this season as we have a good few returners to the club which gives a bit of continuity. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the team gel and get going this weekend."
It will be no easy task for Eagles to return to Limerick with an opening round victory as they face a formidable team in Moycullen. McDermott went on to chat about his sides opponents tonight saying: "Moycullen have played in the Super League for years so it's going to be a very tough game.
"Unfortunately we have a lot of injuries from the pre-season which isn't an ideal way to start the season but we have to to just play with the team we have at the moment."
