Limerick sprint hurdler Sarah Lavin misses out on World Indoor Championship semi-finals

Limerick's Sarah Lavin, of Ireland, competes in the Women's 60m hurdles heat during day three of the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Poland on Sunday

LIMERICK sprint hurdler Sarah Lavin has missed out on a place in the women's 60m hurdles semi-finals at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Torun, Poland.

Lisnagry woman Lavin, of Emerald AC, finished fifth in her heat of the Women’s 60m Hurdles on Sunday clocking a time of 8.08 seconds, which was not enough to progress to Sunday's evening’s semi-final.

The top three finishers in each heat qualified automatically for the semi-finals, with the next six fastest advancing on time.

However, Lavin's time of 8.08 wasn't quick enough for her to secure one of the non-automatic slots.

Afterwards 31-year-old Olympian Lavin said: “I’m honestly lost for words, I wish I could tell you what happened.

“I know it was sloppy, I know I didn’t run fast enough – which is the bottom line, it’s a sprint. I had a very good warm-up. There’s nothing that signalled I might put out a performance like that…That was all I had today and that wasn’t good enough.

“I don’t know if I’ve come to a major championship and gone out in the first round ever, I’m obviously incredibly disappointed.”
