Limerick Athletics - Weekly News Update

PRE-RACE favourites lived up to expectations as there was a ‘Bilboa double’ at the13th staging of this popular south Limerick run. Declan Moore’s ‘winning streak’ continued as he was first to cross the line in a time of 19:31.

He was more than a minute clear of Karl Lenihan who took the ‘Silver Medal’ in a time of 20:41 with West Limerick Clubmate Killian Lynch completing the podium in 20:49. 4th Dan Colleran (Mallow) 22:09, 5 th and 1st M50 Gary Egan An Bru 23:13. M40 Michael Griffin 23:13.

Declan Moore, winner for the second year in a row received the Jim Hogan Cup in memory of the great Limerick born international athlete.

Form also held in the Women’s race as Pamela Kirby took top honours in a time of 24:41. Sinead McDermott (27:28) and Louise Matthews (27:55) made it a Dooneen ‘2-3’. 4th and 1st F40 Kate Murray 27:57, 5th Fiona Boyce, North Cork 28:10, F50 Lorraine Kirby W.L. 29:21.

Other times included Pat Roche 39:19 who the following day would finish 119th from the 182 in the Burren Marathon, John Paul McCarthy 26:51, Kevin O’Donoghue 26:12, Helen Hennessey 33:12, Joe Chawke 27:16, Eilis Hennessey 35:18, Verena Tarpey 32:45. A total of 143 finishers was up on last year.

Thanks to Kilmallock AC for being excellent hosts, to sponsors and volunteers Munster U20/U23 Senior/Masters T&F Championships & U11-U16 Combined events.

Taking place on Saturday and Sunday in wet and at times cold conditions there was good performances by Limerick athletes from Juvenile to Masters.

For Dooneen, Emer Purtill continues to excel as she took Gold in the U16 Pentathlon. Emer set a new Munster record of 3137 points in securing the gold. Aine Frawley of St Mary’s AC was a close 2nd.

Her brother Robert was 2nd in the Boys U14 event. Clubmate Leagh Moloney was a treble winner of the U20 Triple Jump, Long Jump and 100mh titles. Olga Nedvede set a Championship record of 7.82m, on her way to victory in the Senior Weight for Distance.

She was also 2nd in the Discus and 1st F40. Irish Masters International Shane O’Sullivan added to his already heavy medal collection as he took Gold in the M40 200m and 400m plus 100m Silver.

He was ‘delighted with his 400m time of 54.8 secs in windy conditions ‘and feels that the Munster Championship is a great ‘building block’ for the season ahead. Shane’s hopes to peak for the World Masters in Gothenburg where he will represent Ireland in the Individual 400m and he hopes to make the Irish 400m relay team also.

Paul Phelan was 2nd M40 in the Long Jump.

For Limerick AC, Alana Frattaroli was 1st in the Senior Shot Putt while Nathan Ndlovu was 3rd in Senior 200m. Aaron O’Connor won the U20 Triple Jump. Aoife Ryan was 2nd in the U20 100m and 3rd in the 400m. Rex Nyamakazi was 3rd in the 100m and 200m. Susan Murnane was 1st F45 in the 800m.

Aine Frawley of St Mary's was 2nd to Emer Purtill in the U16 Pentathlon Leroy Cremin of West Limerick won the Boys U13 Pentathlon. Aaron Lynch was impressive winner of the U20 5000m in 16:14.29. At Masters Niall O’Callaghan was an impressive winner of the M40 1500m, and now holds both Indoor and outdoor titles at the said distance.

Thomas Roche was 3rd M45 in the Discus, Liam Healy was 2nd M50 Discus. Laura Frawley, of Bruree, also wrote her way into the record books setting an U23 championship record in winning the Weight for Distance.

Fixtures:
The Ger Mullane 5K/10K Memorial Run hosted by Bilboa AC takes place on Friday 14 th June at 8pm. Entries on Eventmaster. Ger Mullane contended in many races in 1990’s and early-mid 2000’s.

Newcastle West AC Notes:

National Community Games Cross Country 
The community games national cross country relays were held in Gormanstown, Co. Meath on Sunday and the club had a number of juvenile members representing Limerick County. Joseph Carr and Alice McKiernan were in the U14 sub relay mixed team running 800m and 600m respectively, their team placed first in the sub category.
Darragh Collins, James King and Joseph Carr (sub) were the u14 boys team and won a bronze national medal. Fiona Mulcahy and Alex O Sullivan were part of the mixed u12 team and placed fourth also receiving a medal.
Jack Young, Aoife Cremin and Tom Howie were part of a mixed relay team and also had a fantastic race. Well Done to all these members and their families who missed the Limerick Hurling game to represent their county.

Burren Half Marathon 
Well done to our club members who took on this challenge in Co.Clare on Saturday. Results: Kevin Kelly 1:49:39, Mark Lenihan 1:49:42, Martin Lyons 1:59:25 and Mike Brosnahan 2:02:53.

Training Tip:

“Easy low intensity aerobic running, anaerobic threshold training and speed development work form the bedrock of all success in endurance running. Easy running should comprise a majority of your total training time.

"Anaerobic threshold refers to a specific training zone which regularly equates to a pace that you can only sustain for around 60-70 minutes. While speed development can be harnessed through ‘strides’ and short hill sprints” - Mike Carmody
