THEY are well used to the white heat of battle but come 7.30pm on May 16, three well-known sporting figures will be fired up for a challenge of a different kind.
Former Munster and Ireland rugby star David Wallace, international rugby referee George Clancy and Limerick FC star player Stephen Folan will walk across 20 feet of burning embers as part of the Special Olympics World Record Fire Walk Challenge.
“I never did one before but I have seen people do it so why not give it a lash,” said former Lions star David Wallace who is a Special Olympics ambassador.
The fire walking challenge is the Special Olympics main fundraising event for the Limerick 2014 Special Olympics games which take place in Limerick from June 12 to June 15 next.
The challenge is also an attempt at a world record for the most individuals consecutively fire walking at a single venue. The record is currently held by a group in New Zealand and stands at 608 people.
“Obviously the whole aim is to try to break the record set by New Zealand but the main focus is to raise money for Special Olympics. Let’s hope this will help in a big way,” David continued.
Would he be nervous about subjecting his feet to such intense heat?
“You would have to be nervous - it’s not a natural thing to go walking on 20 foot of burning embers. I would imagine that with some motivational speaking before it, you get yourself in the right frame of mind. It will be toughest for the first person who has to go and do it, once somebody does it, it lays down the challenge for everyone else.”
The event which takes place in the Kilmurry Lodge, Castletroy is being run in association with Brian Moore (Peak Potential) Ireland’s only fire walking master instructor. Special Olympics have announced that SuperValu are the official sponsor of the Fire Walk Challenge. Each participant in the fire walk must raise a minimum of €75 to partake in the fire walk (students to raise €50). Anyone who would like to take part in the fire walk can sign up on the website at www.specialolympics.ie and follow the link to the fire walk event and sign up online. Alternatively they can request a sponsorship pack directly from Frank by email at email@example.com or by phone at 085-8626403.
