THE ANNUAL What Next Dance Festival returns at Dance Limerick this month and 20 performers from across Ireland and abroad will unite for six days of discovery and celebration.

This year’s programme sheds light on dance artists and choreographers bringing their unique voices, experiences and rich questions to their dance-making. Their work offers us perspectives on relationships, resistance, liberation, society and how we want to be together in our communities.

The festival will take place from February 10 to February 15 with performances, workshops and talks being held on February 13-15 in Saint John's Church in Limerick city.

Leonor Miralles, Communications Co-ordinator, Dance Limerick, commented: “We have two artists from Aerowaves, which is a European platform that are coming this year for the festival to present their work.

“We have a total of seven dance pieces that we're presenting throughout three performance nights at Dance Limerick... and audiences will be able to enjoy different dance styles, mostly contemporary dance.”

Ms Miralles said one of the main highlights of the festival will be an immersive new dance work, ‘The Weight’, by Luca Truffarelli, set against a soaring orchestral backdrop composed by Greg Haines and recorded by the RTÉ Orchestra.

Audiences will also enjoy the work of Limerick-based The Parsley Collective, made up of five dancers who share a curiosity for improvisation and exploration. Jessie Thompson will present her newest piece, commissioned by Dance Limerick for the festival, ‘missing you, missing me’, a look at unique familiar settings, grief, guilt and the consequences of these.

The final event will be Ceílí Afro Dabke Ukraine, an upbeat world music ceílí dance with live music. Ms Miralles said this is the second year they've organised the céilí dancing and she is “very excited” about this event. “We have live music and various types of dance from around the world so we have Brazilian, Afro, Ukrainian, Palestinian, DAPCA, and other styles.”

Anyone interested in attending the festival is advised to purchase tickets in advance on dancelimerick.ie. Limited tickets will be sold at the door.
