Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan has been under fire as season three of the hit Netflix drama releases for US audiences.

The 37-year-old Galway actress grew to fame for her role as Claire in hit comedy series Derry girls and more recently for her role as Penelope Featherington in the Netflix period drama.

Season three sees Coughlan play Penelope Featherington and it follows her love story with Colin Bridgerton played by Luke Newton.

As every Bridgerton season there are many steamy scenes and Coughlan has come under fire on social media as she is criticised for not having 'a stereotypical body' for an intimate role.

US fans have taken to TikTok with their comments on Coughlan as they get a first look with an early release of the season.

@raychfayce I am not a plus size person so pleas lmk if I’m out of line here. And let me be SO clear I love Nicola, I am a huge fan, I just also think calling her plus size when she has publicly said she is not is not progress forward but progress backward for body acceptance and representation. #bridgerton #nicolacoughlan #polin ♬ original sound - Raych

US creator Raych Fayce shared her thoughts surrounding the discourse on Coughlan's body and many fans have had mixed reactions.
One user said: "She is good representation for different body types than the tall willowy type that is usually seen, I think the way that she dresses with different angles and bold lines makes people think she's big."
Another user said: "She is good representation for different body types than the tall willowy type that is usually seen, I think the way that she dresses with different angles and bold lines makes people think she's big."
Another user said: "She’s not plus size, she just has a rounded body shape. She’s gorgeous, but it’s nuts that someone who is completely in standard/small sizes is labeled plus sized because just has a curvy shape."
Coughlan herself commented on the lanuage surrounding her body and weight in a recent interview with The Irish Times, she said: "If you have an opinion about my body please, please don’t share it with me ... It’s really hard to take the weight of thousands of opinions on how you look being sent directly to you every day.
"People love to undermine women and their hard work. I don’t think anything has improved unfortunately, but the only thing I can try and do is just go out there and do the best I can do with every job I’m given. And to hopefully get as many different roles as I can. All I care about is the work. Bodies change, if I lose weight or gain weight or I do anything it’s no one’s business, all I care about is doing good acting and being judged on that.”
Bridgerton, season three, part one will air on Netflix on Thursday, May 16 and part two will air on Monday, June 13.
