LIMERICK quartet Small Church are about to release their first single, Kill My Friends - the first delivery from their upcoming EP.
After meeting in college, vocalist and guitarist Andreea Mocanu, keyboardist Seán Horgan, bassist Killian Moran and drummer Paddy Critchley collided to make music together.
The four Limerick School of Art and Design alumni usually “start quiet, then get loud”.
Speaking of their first release, Andreea said: “It was written during quarantine. It has an angry feel, I feel, because a lot of us have been placed in isolated spaces and we didn't get to like see a lot of people and it was just a very lonely time for everyone.
“When I wrote that song, I was kind of thinking of a more like emo vibe, like everyone is so lonely.
“It's like suffocating, horrible. Everyone's so sad. But you know, you can kind of use the creative process to get rid of that feeling. Almost like retaliate.”
According the keyboardist, Seán, the song encapsulates a feeling young people weren't used to.
“Usually young people or people that were our age weren't faced with the potential of their own mortality you know? At times, it was literally like, is this the apocalypse?
“Because it was so claustrophobic as well, the time that we kind of got to spend together, when we were actually getting to be creative was a bit of a blessing,” Seán recalls.
Are they nervous ahead of their first ever release?
Andreea says: “It's always kind of nerve-racking putting something new out because you just don't know how it's gonna be received. But I have like high hopes for this one.”
She hopes people will be able to relate to the song.
“Hopefully someone else might engage with what we're producing.”
Kill My Friends will be released this Friday, July 28. To celebrate the occasion, Small Church will be playing in the Record Room, on the same date.
