Anger as on-duty garda assaulted in Limerick

A TEENAGER has been arrested after a garda was assaulted while carrying out an arrest.
Gardai were alerted to a disturbance on a bus which was travelling through Askeaton on Friday last.
A male in his late teens was arrested at the scene under the Public Order Act, and was taken to a garda station in Limerick.
He will appear before Newcastle West district court at a later date in connection with the incident.
During the course of making the arrest, an on-duty garda was “physically assaulted and sustained minor injuries”, a spokesperson told Limerick Live.
He remained on duty following the alleged incident which took place just before 7pm on Friday.
As part of an investigation into this alleged assault, a male in his late teens was arrested on Monday.
He was detained under section four of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a garda station in Limerick.
Investigations into the assault incident are ongoing.
Councillor Adam Teskey, chairman of the Limerick Joint Policing Committee (JPC) condemned the attack.
“There is no place in society for this level of brutal behaviour. Members of An Garda Síochánao have always been well-respected in our communities, particularly in rural areas. This level of abuse, which is unfortunately not isolated, must be stopped. Further legislation will have to be introduced to effectively deal with this problem,” said the Adare/Rathkeale councillor.
He believes that a wider debate is needed with regards to how social media platforms are potentially contributing to attacks like these.
“A member of An Garda Síochána should be able to carry out their duty without fear or favour at all times, the government has a responsibility to protect members from this level of brutality,” Cllr Teskey added.
He wished the serving garda a speedy recovery.
