Mr O’Donnell and his Euro colleague, Mr Tom McCartan, have been allowed retain their dual mandate, in the event of re-election to the European Parliament.

However, Mr O’Donnell is far from happy with the way the parliament functions within the European framework of administration.

“Parliament is fulfilling a useful role and the commissioners can be brought in to be questioned by its members, but I am not satisfied with its overall role,” he said.

“Too many recommendations have been made which have been totally ignored by the council of ministers. I feel very strongly in this regard and the transport section of which I am a member is taking the council of ministers to the European Court of Justice because of their failure to act on 84 recommendations by parliament.

He may be joined on the FG ticket by Jimmy Deenihan.
