Memories, 1983: Former helpers are the new poor

FAMILIES who last year were helping the poor of Limerick will this year be accepting help for themselves in the form of food parcels to get them over the festive season.

FAMILIES who last year were helping the poor of Limerick will this year be accepting help for themselves in the form of food parcels to get them over the festive season.

“The new poor are with us here in Limerick - many of the people who helped us last year will be receiving the help this year,” said Fr Vincent Kavanagh, the Redemptorist who hopes to feed 1,500 families in Limerick city and county.

Hundreds of people throughout Limerick are taking part in the sponsored slim during the month of November.

All money collected will be used to buy food parcels for the poor.

Already there have been 3,500 sponsorship cards distributed. They will be available all day Saturday in the Crescent Shopping Centre.

This year the slim campaign is enlarged and every firm in Limerick and Shannon has been asked to organise teams.

The first six teams, both in the women’s and men’s categories, who lost the most weight will qualify for valuable prizes. Food parcels will be worth £60.
