Memories, 1963: Alert action of Limerick garda

A MEMBER of the Limerick gardai had a very unusual experience last night on the northside of the city.

A MEMBER of the Limerick gardai had a very unusual experience last night on the northside of the city.

Dressed in plain clothes, the garda was approached by an itinerant for some alms. The garda duly obliged him by giving him a little money.

However, later in the night, while walking in the vicinity of the Ennis Road area, the garda came across the same itinerant - but with one rather significant difference.

He noticed that the man to whom he had given alms earlier in the night was now wearing a different and much better-looking suit of clothing.

On questioning him, this alert member of An Garda Siochana discovered that the itinerant had exchanged his old clothes for a suit he had taken from a bedroom in the unoccupied house of a widow nearby on the North Circular Road.

The man in question has since been charged with the theft.

He has been remanded to appear before Mr Justice M De Burca at this Friday’s sitting of Limerick District Court.
