Memories, 1994: ‘Miracle’ patient speaks

ONE Limerickman’s New Year wish has come true: Declan Walsh, 23, has made a “miraculous” recovery from coma and regained his speech.

ONE Limerickman’s New Year wish has come true: Declan Walsh, 23, has made a “miraculous” recovery from coma and regained his speech.

He had been on the brink of death for weeks after a freak motor bike accident in America in September.

But, much to the delight of his father Frank, Declan started to talk last Friday.

“It’s an absolute miraculous recovery - he just woke up on New Year’s eve,” said a delighted Mr Walsh of Merval Park, Clareview.

“He can speak perfectly to you, face to face or on the telephone.”

Mr Walsh believed that Declan could understand things, so he constantly spoke to him. It was this persistence that paid off.

He added that he couldn’t describe his feelings on seeing his only son in a “nearly vegetable like state”.
