Garda sting sees 17 motorists caught for same offence in warning to others

Gardaí fined 17 motorists €2,040 after catching them using phones behind the wheel, totalling 51 penalty points
Earlier this week, the Roads Policing Unit (RPU) of An Garda Síochána carried out a focused operation in Kilkenny City to curb mobile phone use at the wheel.
Over the course of the day, 17 drivers were detected holding a phone while driving.
Each offence carries three penalty points, bringing the total to 51 points, and fines amounted to €2,040 in all.
Motorists are reminded that under current law, all hand-held phone use while driving is prohibited, with gardaí empowered to impose on-the-spot fines and penalty points.
Irish drivers are urged to “get the point, not the points” by stowing their phones safely and focusing fully on the road ahead.
