'No more adjournments'-Limerick man admits stealing beer, wine and vodka from local shops

Patrick Ryan told he must pay compensation to the retailers following shoplifting incidents in Kilmallock
A COUNTY Limerick man has been ordered to pay compensation after he admitted stealing alcohol from a number of stores in his local town.
Patrick Ryan, also known as Patrick Prenderville, aged 55, of Riverview, Kilmallock pleaded guilty to the theft charges when he appeared before the local court.
Judge Patricia Harney was told the charges, contrary to Section 4 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001, relate to separate incidents at Spar and Ryan’s SuperValu in the town.
Mr Ryan was asked if he wanted to have the matter dealt with in the district court, or before judge and jury in the circuit court. He opted for the district court, and pleaded guilty to each of the offences.
Inspector Gearóid Thompson said the first theft occurred on June 12, 2025, when Mr Ryan took beer valued at €8 from Spar on Lord Edward Street, Kilmallock without paying.
A second offence occurred at the same premises on September 26, 2025, when he took wine valued at €9.95 - again without paying. The court heard the stolen alcohol was not recovered by gardaí.
The final theft occurred on September 29, 2025, when Mr Ryan took vodka valued at €19.95 from Ryan’s SuperValu on Sarsfield Street, Kilmallock, again without paying.
Following a submission from solicitor Julianne Kiely Judge Harney directed Mr Ryan to pay compensation of €38, representing the total loss incurred by the retailers.
The case was adjourned until February 17 to allow for payment with the judge warning there will be no further adjournments.
