National Masters and Juvenile BXC finals Dundalk
Dundalk Institute of Technology was the venue for the National Intermediate, Masters and Juvenile B XC finals on February 3, 2019.
Mark Guerin of Limerick AC competed in the intermediate category and he came 19th overall. Mooreabbey Milers fielded a team in the masters section. Tom Blackburn, Willie O’Donoghue and Damien Holian ran well but were just outside the medals but coming a strong fourth place finish. Alan McCutcheon of Dooneen AC competed in the U-13 age group and he ran well winning a medal coming home in 6th place.
Munster Star Awards
The Munster Star awards took place on February 2 in Rathkeale House, Co Limerick and a host of athletes were recognised during the ceremony. There were four Limerick athletes awarded in various categories. Tim Ryan of Dooneen AC won the masters athlete of the year. Geoffrey Joy O’Regan of Sunhill Harriers AC and Laura Frawley of St Mary’s Limerick AC won the best indoor athletes of the year. Kevin O’Grady of Dooneen AC won the cross country Limerick athletes of the year.
Milford 10k race took place again at the weekend. Top three places went to Declan Moore Bilboa AC, Colm Turner Limerick AC and Kieran Lees Mooreabbey Milers AC. First three women over the line were Barbara Cleary Donore Harriers AC, Hilka Kontro Limerick AC and Murna Griffin of Limerick Triathlon Club.
Athletics Ireland are offering a number of training workshops in the Limerick region over the coming weeks.
An Assistant coaching course will take place on 10th February in Scoil Pol, Kilfinane. Register with Athletics Ireland for this training course which will cover the basics of 3 key events – running, long jump and shot put.
There is a run, throw and jumps workshop held over 3 weeks in February covering high jump, endurance training, long jump. Sprints, shot put and hurdles. Course runs on 6th February, 13th and 20th February at 6pm sharp at University of Limerick track. Register with Athletics Ireland.
Michael Carmody of An Brú is offering a training workshop to runners of all levels and ability on Saturday, 9th February in Deebert House, Kilmallock from 9.30am to 1.30pm. The cost is €15 with a discount for club runners and groups. Key principles covered by the workshop will include importance of recovery and strategies, how to determine your ideal race distance, goal planning and assessment, running drills, gym programming, injury prevention, mobility and flexibility. The annual 2019 Michal Rejmer will take place again around the Country Club in Caherdavin on 12th April, 19th April and 26th April. It is a 5 mile route and all races start at 7.30pm. €2,000 in prize money over the 3 weeks. It is just €40 to enter all three races or €15 per race on the night. The Mallow 10 mile takes place on Saturday March 24, 2019 at 12.30pm. Places are limited to 2,000. Regeneron Great Limerick Run, Sunday May 5, 2019 – the race has the option of a 6 mile, half marathon and full marathon.
For juveniles, the Munster U-9 to U-11indoor track and field finals take place on Saturday, February 9. Events range from shot put, long jump, sprints and middle distance running. Entries through club secretary. On the February 23 and 24, Nenagh will once again be the venue for the Munster U-12 – U-19 finals.
