New shelter to provide two stops for growing school community

A SECOND bus shelter will be provided in the Mungret area, it has been confirmed.

The new bus shelter foundation will be installed across the road from the existing one, with the shelter itself expected to follow in the coming weeks.

The additional shelter will provide for two bus shelters serving two bus stops, helping to futureproof the area as the local community and school continue to grow.

The new bus shelter will serve the Mungret Community College bus stop.

Bus Éireann will be asked to consider allowing the final outbound bus stop to operate as both a pick-up and drop-off point.

Private coach operators will also be able to use both stops.

Welcoming the development, Councillor Daniel Butler said: “This is a positive step forward for students, parents and the wider Mungret community. I have been working on a number of measures to improve bus services to Mungret Community College, and securing the bus services themselves was an important first step.

“I subsequently raised the need for proper bus shelters so that students have a more suitable place to wait for their buses. I am pleased that a commitment has now been given to provide a second shelter, which will deliver a better long-term arrangement for the area.

“There was understandably some confusion when the first shelter appeared on the outbound side rather than the inbound side. However, rather than simply highlighting the problem, I wanted to work towards a practical solution. The commitment to a second shelter is welcome news, and I will continue to follow up on the remaining details.”

While welcoming progress on the shelters, Cllr Butler stressed that the work to improve school transport is not finished.

Cllr Butler added: “Getting a bus service in place is important, but it is equally important that the service works for the students who depend on it. If the morning bus does not get pupils to school on time, then the timetable needs to be examined.

“The objective is straightforward: reliable bus services, suitable facilities for passengers, and a timetable that meets the needs of our students.”

Cllr Butler said he would continue to keep residents and the school community updated as further progress is made.
