THE FIFTH and sixth class students of Scoil Mhuire National School, Pallaskenry have launched an exciting new podcast.
Their teacher Tommy O'Connor came up with the idea for the podcast which he says is potentially the first podcast being produced by children for children and the first being done by a class in a school.
The first two episodes of The Pure Class Podcast are already available to stream on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
Mr O'Connor said the students pick a different theme for each episode and the first episode discussed whether children should have phones. They also discuss their pit and peak of the week, choosing one good and one bad thing that happens each week.
The students' pit last week was KSI's new song release. “They all said it was useless,” remarked Mr O'Connor. “Their peak of the week was Ireland beating Finland in the soccer game... so they were delighted with that.”
Another segment on the podcast is the controversial corner where the students discuss something deemed as controversial. “Last week was homework and whether kids should have homework.”
Speaking about the inception of the podcast, Mr O'Connor said the idea dawned on him during the summer break. “There's a new kind of digital literacy after coming into the curriculum, which is basically making sure kids are proficient in computers by the time they finish up in primary school so it just tied in nicely with that.”
They record the podcast using a laptop in the school and Mr O'Connor said the audio was much better than they'd expected. The students also recorded an intro, an outro and jingles.
Mr O'Connor commented that there's a “great buzz” among the students at the moment. “They were all mad to go home and listen to it with their parents and they all came in this morning telling us about their parents' views on it and what they thought of it.”
