A LIMERICK man has made a great start to an ambitious 2,000km walking challenge in aid of Cliona’s Foundation.

John Loftus, who turned 79 on Friday, has already covered 23.25km and clocked up 33,331 steps in the first three days of his mammoth challenge.

He is taking on the challenge between his 79th and 80th birthdays, with the aim of raising vital funds and awareness for Cliona’s Foundation, which supports families caring for seriously sick children.

The challenge was officially launched on Friday with John taking on Limerick’s Three Bridges, where he was joined by a large number of volunteers, friends, family and supporters.

Supporters joined John for the walk, helping him to take the first steps towards his 2,000km target while highlighting the important work carried out by the charity.

Over the next 12 months, his target is to walk at least 2,000km – more than the equivalent of four times the length of Ireland.

The walk launch was described as a “brilliant show of support” for John and, most importantly, for the families and children who will benefit from the fundraising campaign.
