Kind-hearted Limerick women give Irish Cancer Society a boost

Some €3,000 raised for well-loved charity’s annual Daffodil Day appeal
MEMBERS of the Women’s Shed serving Dooradoyle and Raheen have raised €3,300 for a cancer charity.
The Irish Cancer Society’s Daffofil Day collection has received the boost following the efforts of women in the club.
They have been supporting the Irish Cancer Society for the last three years, and the members provide volunteers for the collection days organised for the charity.
The Women’s Shed members paid tribute to Liam Gleeson, manager of the Parkway Shopping Centre and his team, who let them set up shop in the facility at Dublin Road.
It’s one of a number of charities the Women’s Shed for Dooradoyle and Raheen support.
They also back the Christmas Shoebox Appeal, helping vulnerable children overseas, blankets for the University Maternity Hospital, and also highlight information on other fundraising events taking place across Limerick.
Members of the Women’s Shed are on a well-deserved summer holiday, but will return for the autumn season on Tuesday, September 1.
That night at 7pm, they will be in the Ballybrown Community Centre registering new members.
The following Wednesday, September 9 at 7pm, they will be welcoming new recruits in Mary Immaculate College.
The two nights provide a chance for exiting members to renew their membership, and new members to join up.
Established in 2022, the Women’s Shed exists to provide a safe, social environment to connect with others, learn new skills, and reduce social isolation - in a similar manner to the Men’s Sheds which have grown in popularity in recent years.
A dedicated committee of eight women are now steering the ship, led ably by chairperson Annette Murphy of Dooradoyle.
