Hurlers’ Munster final celebrations continue in unique Limerick pub

Limerick hurlers and management enjoy a few ‘quiet’ ones in The Tavern in the city
THE TRIUMPHANT hurlers and management partied in one of the most rural pubs in Limerick on Sunday night and now they have celebrated in the heart of the city.
John Kiely and his band of merry men enjoyed a singsong in The Village Inn in Ballyorgan on Sunday night after defeating Cork in the Munster final. However, it was a much quieter affair in The Tavern on Upper William Street on Tuesday night.
Proprietor Dominic, a middle-aged Chinese man, has a strict policy with a sign reading: “Silence your cell phone. Keep your feet off the seats. No singing, no dancing and no swearing. This is a respectable house.’’
Dominic said it was a nice surprise and lovely honour when a number of the team came in at around 7pm on Tuesday.
“I was delighted they came in because I love hurling - there was great fun. I watched the Munster final on Sunday. They did very well,” said Dominic.
They don’t serve food as a rule but he and his wife Claire dished up some samosas and spring rolls from their own fridge for the team.
Dominic said he chatted with players Darragh O’Donovan, Shane O’Brien and Gearoid Hegarty.
“All the players are really good boys and introduced themselves. Our pub isn’t like other pubs because we have our policies and they were very respectful,” smiled Dominic, who also had a lovely chat with John Kiely.
The players and management headed off after about two hours of enjoying themselves and Dominic says they are welcome back anytime.
