The Blizzards

Mullingar rockers The Blizzards make a trip to Limerick for the latest in the Twilight Summer Series of Racing in Limerick Racecourse. After a triumphant gig in Oxegen - their fourth in as many years - the five-piece have started to debut new material from their upcoming second album, due for release in September. Lead single 'Trust Me I'm A Doctor' is due soon and promises to be as upbeat as their previous hits. A full programme of seven races is scheduled, with the first race at 5.30pm. Music at 9pm. Great Friday Ultimate Showdown

The Great Friday Ultimate Showdown is a band competition with the competitors vying for the chance to win a main slot at next year's Great Friday Festival. The second heat features the bands Clurichaun, November Trust, Maslow and Decadation and promises to be another great night following last week's win by Full Shred. A third round will take place next Thursday July 31, with the final taking place Saturday September 6. Baker Place. 9pm. 061-418414.

Love Songs with Soprano Kerstin Doelle

German Soprano Kerstin Doelle returns to Friars' Gate to present an evening of romantic love songs from the 17th & 18th Century. Kerstin will be joined by Elisabeth Zobel on Piano. Her programme will include famous melodies by Handel, Puccini, Brahms, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Tschaikowski, Liszt and Wagner. Followers of Fashion

The Hunt Museum is delighted to announce that it will host Followers of Fashion: Women's Dress in 19th and 20th Century Paintings courtesy of the National Gallery of Ireland. The exhibition gathers together a selection of paintings spanning the development of fashionable dress from the early 1800s, through Victorian and Edwardian modes and wartime fashions to those of the 1950s and 1960s. Canadian Indie Week

A showcase gig in advance of the upcoming fifth Canadian music festival Indie Week, taking place in Toronto in October. Local rockers Vesta Varro won the showcase last year and have conspired with Indie Week founder Darryl Hurs to hold the first ever associated shows outside Canada. Local bands Walter Mitty, Maslow and Brendan Markham and band, plus Cork rockers Fred will face-off for a coveted spot on the bill in Toronto in October. Ben Reel

Irish singer-songwriter appears Upstairs in the Dock Road, as perhaps a more laid back alternative to the rock and roll taking place in the Warehouse. The Armagh man recently released latest album 'New Horizon' recently which saw him move in a more rootsy, earthy, Americana rock direction. Influences vary from Springsteen to Neil Young to Ennio Morricone - a live album is to follow later this year. With full band. Dolan's Upstairs. 8pm. €10.

Idle Hands and Peter Delaney

Local rockers Idle Hands are joined by Peter Delaney plus a surprise guest in Baker's. I saw Adam Hourican at the recent Belltable Sessions preview and was very impressed, backed by the rest of the well-regarded Idle Hands I'm sure you will be too. Baker Place 9pm €6. 061-418414.

Super Talent Competition

Local DJs Paul Tarpey and John Greenwood play a summer selection of jazz, reggae, hip hop and afro type house in the courtyard of Nancy Blakes, with free food and occassional drinks promotions setting the scene for a friday night trail on the town. An unmissable dance music date as Dutch DJ supremo Sander Van Doorn makes his Limerick debut in the main room of the Trinity Rooms. Rated 15 in last year's DJMag prestigious Top 100 poll, Van Doorn has clocked up more miles in 12 months than most, with two residencies at Judgement Sunday in Ibiza and at the Gallery in London two recent feathers in his cap. Nu Killa Beats returns to the Underground after a summer break in June. The local posse welcome a special guest from Spain on the night, Tamen a Galwegian who now lives in Barcelona and is a central figure in the Drum & Bass scene in the city. Back up on the night comes in the shape of local Dj's Code & Deep Cut. Code recently launched his debut mix CD on his own Subtle Audio Recordings imprint - copies are available from Empire Music - and he has been playing gigs at home and abroad to promote the release. The Wolfe Tones are back in Limerick for one night only, following their last successful conert at the venue, the band will once again be performing all their greatest hits live - 45 years since they first set on their long journey. Thomas McGuire and Fhiona Ennis

This Fermanagh/Wexford combination was born in 2005 with the release of their very first duet, 'Promised To John'. The duo keep a hectic schedule as they tirelessly work the Irish and UK markets. Baker Place host the latest in their Sunday night film season, destined to continue for the forseeable future while things are slightly quiet. This Sunday Shane has chosen Walk The Line - no, not the spoof with John C Reilly - rather James Mangold's decent biopic of the late Johnny Cash. Joaquin Pheonix turns in a credible performance as the young crooner who is rather good at singing and taking drugs, but not great at relationships - as Reese Witherspoon's June Carter Cash discovers.
