THE weather gods could yet smile on Limerick for the launch of City of Culture this New Year’s Eve.

A massive concert is set to take place in front of City Hall and the latest forecasts are suggesting that the night will be cloudy with just a chance of showers.

Dolores O’Riordan - joined by a section of the Irish Chamber Orchestra - will headline the event, which also features Maverick Sabre, The Strypes and The Coronas, plus Limerick band Leading Armies and Derry songstress Soak.

The Cranberries’ frontwoman is expected to sing four songs with the musicians, and said last week that she was “really looking forward to the New Year’s Eve celebrations which are not just for music lovers but the young and old”.

“Limerick has a bad rap over the years so it is great for the reputation both here in Ireland and abroad for us to be given the honour of hosting the national City of Culture,” she added of the concert, which starts at 8.30pm and finishes at 1am.

A spectacular fireworks display will begin at 8.14pm (20:14) as part of the celebrations.

A family-friendly pageant winding through the streets will take place from 5.30pm, culminating in the Medieval Quarter, featuring puppets provided by street theatre company Bui Bolg.

RTÉ One television will broadcast some of the events from Limerick as part of their New Year’s Eve programming.
