SPORTING events, celebrity models and television dramas were amongst the items most searched by Limerick people over the past year.

However, it was the tragic case of murdered schoolgirl April Jones during October which gripped Limerick people the most, according to the annual Google Zeitgeist.

According to the internet giant, which has released a survey of the top trending and most searched items of this year, the investigation into the abduction of the five-year-old and her subsequent murder was the top-trending search term in Limerick.

The only other news major story to feature in the top 10 was the murder of Irish woman, Jill Meagher in Australia during September.

Perhaps surprisingly, no personalities or news stories from Limerick featured in the top 10, which shows that Limerick people are clearly fans of period dramas as the top trending television programme was Downton Abbey - the third series of which was broadcast in September.

On the sporting front, Euro 2012 and the London Olympics may have sparked interest nationally but for Limerick people it was Europe’s victory over the United States in golf’s Ryder Cup which proved most popular.

The plight of footballer, Fabrice Muamba, who was struck down by a cardiac arrest while playing for Bolton Wanderers in March also proved to be of huge interest to internet users in Limerick.

The most searched celebrity model was former Miss World Rosanna Davison, who visited Limerick in April of this year for the ‘Style in the City’ event.

When it comes to music-related searches, last year’s X Factor winners, Little Mix, and UK boy band, The Wanted, also featured in the top 10 most searched items in Limerick.

And, the questions most asked in Limerick were “How to Hack?” and “What is Love?”
