THEIR song about Barack Obama catapulted them into the international spotlight, and now the Corrigan brothers are preparing to entertain a new audience in Malaysia in the New Year.

The band from Castletroy, whose breakthrough hit was There’s no one as Irish as Barack Obama, will be playing at an event hosted by the controversial Cardiff City owner Tan Sri Vincent Tan in February. The Malaysian billionaire tycoon was recently ranked by Forbes as Malaysia’s ninth richest man.

Mr Tan sponsors an annual concert for his employees in Malaysia and this year the headline act are The Corrigan Brothers.

“Back in September we wrote a song about Cardiff City’s win over Manchester City in the Premier League,” explained lead singer Ger Corrigan.

“It was called Vincent Tan, What a Man and it celebrated Mr Tan’s celebration on the pitch after the game. Within two weeks we had received an invite to be Mr Tan’s guests at Cardiff’s home game against Spurs. We had a wonderful time as the special guests of the club, meeting the players and dining with Mr Tan and his family as well as performing live for his special guests including Lion’s captain Sam Warburton. We filmed a special performance for Malaysian TV in the stadium as well as presenting Mr Tan with a framed copy of the CD. Within days of the broadcast of the TV performance in Malaysia we discovered that we were number one in the radio play charts.”

The band have been formally invited to play at the concert at the end of February. In the meantime, Ger said they are busy working with producer Pete Creighton on a new Luis Suarez song that will be released in January, as well as a special film for broadcast on American TV on Saint Patrick’s day that they are currently filming.

They have also been approached by a Hollywood studio for permission to use their song celebrating Barack Obama’s Irish roots in a major film project about the US President, which is due to be released in 2016.
