LIMERICK will be attempting to break into the Guinness Book of World Records this weekend - by having the most people wearing Christmas jumpers in one place.

Two years ago, nearly 600 people in Dublin took to the streets, dressed in their favourite festive sweaters.

Now, the Limerick organisers are hopeful that the Milk Market-goers will get into the spirit of the season and beat this record, even though Guinness are unable to send a representative on the day. John Coughlan, proprietor of The Edge clothing store at the market, said since the world record attempt was first publicised in this newspaper some weeks ago “people have gone crazy”.“It’s unbelievable. This has been our busiest year to date. It’s just gone crazy. We have sold hundreds of jumpers and people are still coming in looking for them,” he said.

Mr Coughlan conceived the idea as a way for people to dress up and “escape all the doom and gloom at the moment” and as an opportunity to welcome families back to the market in Christmas week, a custom he feels is dying out. The event will be held in the Milk Market this Friday, December 21, from 12 noon to 1pm.

“It will be a great day out for shopping in the city and a great day for all the family. Previously children were allowed by the Government take the week before Christmas off from school. But that’s no longer the case and the atmosphere died down a bit as a result, “ he said.

Now 30 years in business, The Edge, beloved by students for its vintage credentials, and rockabilly fare, is seeing an surge in demand for Christmas jumpers.

“Christmas jumpers are really taking off, especially with the Christmas party season, and the trend is only going to keep getting bigger, “ he said.

David O’Brien, manager of the Milk Market said the idea has really taken flight and captured the attention of the public. The Christmas market will be running until December 24, and the Santa’s Grotto will be on Saturday, December 22.
