ABBEYFEALE councillor Liam Galvin has called for unemployed Eastern Europeans claiming unemployment benefit to be sent home, stating that a week's social welfare money could cover their airfares.
Cllr Galvin said that 20 houses in an Abbeyfeale estate of 80 houses which he canvassed had Eastern Europeans as residents.

"I am by no means racist, and I would like to help everyone, but I say that the time has come to take people aside and tel
l them that they had been very welcome here when the good times meant that work was plentiful," said Cllr Galvin.

"But the time has come to say straight out that we as a country cannot afford all these benefits and that these people would be more than welcome back in five, 10 or 15 years from now, whenever things have picked up again."

Cllr Galvin said that the Government should examine the options and come up with a scheme to encourage such people to leave.

"The equivalent of a week's social welfare would more than pay for the air fares," he said. "This country is bankrupt and somebody has to shout stop, because we can't afford to go on the way we are going. I see the day when people will go along to the local post office to find the doors locked, because the money just won't be there."

Cllr Galvin also said that he believes that a considerable amount of fraud is also being committed through the wrongful claiming of entitlements on the part of foreign nationals.

He has been told, he said, that taxi drivers are picking up foreigners at the airport and driving them straight to the welfare office and straight back to the airport again.

"But the Government is taking every easy option, such as means testing old age pensioners and sending inspectors into places looking for TV licences. They'd be far better off sending in inspectors to see how much welfare and other payments are being received fraudulently," he said. "We have to realise what is going on."

An Englishman in West Limerick,

Abbeyfeale 28/05/2009 10:10:27
Cllr Liam Galvins' attitude demonstrates why West Limerick is rapidly plummeting back into the dark ages. Over the last 5 years, those Europeans have added more value to Ireland than Mr Galvin has done and he has the cheek to knock on my door and ask for my vote. I wonder if Galvins comments also apply to the English? Where will the 20 million Irish who are living in England go? Liam Galvin should immediately step down as he has demonstrated an unacceptable level of racism and can no longer represent any part of a democratic society. Goodbye Mr Galvin.

Embarrased Abbeyfeale man,

Far from Abbeyfeale 03/06/2009 20:52:25
This is the most embarrasing and unhelpful statement that could be made. How an elected representative can start a statment with "I am not a racist ...but" and then proceed to deliver a racist and xenophobic tirade is beyond me. Cllr Galvin's statement is cold and calculated to appeal to the inner bigot and racist in people - it is especially cynical in these depressed times to seek an easy answer and apportion blame to a particular community. Benefit fraud has been endemic in Irish culture for many a year (as well Mr. Galvin knows) and it is not something new invented by the perceived "foreign hordes" invading Abbeyfeale and Limerick. Particularly frightening is his suggestion that these "Eastern Europeans" be taken aside and told to go home - is Mr. Galvin rounding up a posse?
It is always the uneducated and ignorant who fear diversity and change, it is strange to see we have our very own Idi Amin in Abbeyfeale. Please be assured that Mr. Galvin does not represent the views of all Abbeyfeale people!

Embarassed Abbeyfeale woman,

I couldn’t be more embarrassed.Cllr Galvin’s views represent nothing more than thinly veiled bigotry and racism. Are we to understand that Fine Gaels official line is that European residents are unwelcome in Abbeyfeale? If so, we should probably raise this as a discussion point with the many Germans that work in Kostal. We should probably also think carefully about the many benefits that Abbeyfeale has enjoyed as a result of Irelands membership of the European Union such as an excellent education system and improved infrastructure.

I’m appalled. I grew up in Abbeyfeale and while I certainly didn’t vote for Mr. Galvin, I was proud that Abbeyfeale had what I considered to be a friendly and welcoming culture. I now live in London and wonder what Mr. Galvin and his likes have done to my home town.

I would like to remind Mr. Galvin that the reason that Ireland is “bankrupt” as he says is nothing to do with Eastern Europeans. If he had an IQ even in double figures he might have some chance of understanding the issue of failed foreign investment and over-subscribed component debt. However, if Mr. Galvin would like to stand behind his ridiculous views he might like to consult the BNP manifesto for some ideas. His comments are just one step away from the white supremacy rubbish that they tout.

Furthermore, I think that young Galvin should remember the millions of Irish emigrants all around the world. The floods of emigrants that came to London in the 80’s, the millions that travelled to the US and Canada.

Mr. Galvin should be seriously reprimanded for his views and I honestly believe that his dismissal from the party is not too much to expect.
