A BUSINESS breakfast with the Irish-American Mayor of Boston Marty Walsh has attracted over 125 guests to Shannon Airport.
Hosted by the Shannon Group, the event was attended by the mayors and cathaoirligh of counties across the western seaboard as well as business leaders from US multinationals and indigenous firms. Also present were members of Mayor Walsh’s extended family.
That Mayor Walsh should choose Shannon as the first stop on his first overseas trip since being sworn in was an honour for the airport, said its chairman Rose Hynes.
“Mayor Walsh’s election as the first Irish-American Mayor of Boston in 20 years is a great honour for all Irish people and in particular for the west of Ireland. Just six decades after his father John and mother Mary emigrated from Carna and Ros Muc respectively, he climbed, to the highest office in the most Irish of US cities,” said Ms Hynes.
“Being of Irish descent is a very big part of who I am as a person,” said Mayor Walsh.
“I spent a lot of time as a young person coming over to Ireland and as a younger adult. My last visit was four years ago and most of that was due to running for Mayor of the City of Boston but I very frequently come over to this country and I love Ireland,” he said.
