Vital league points on the line

MUNSTER attempt to revive their Magners League campaign this Thursday night against Llanelli Scarlets.

Back in January snow caused the postponement of this round 11 game which takes place in Musgrave Park (kick-off 7.35).

Tony McGahan's side will look to reignite the defence of their title after last week's 31-22 loss to the Dragons in Rodney Parade.

While Munster's away form in the competition is far from impressive, home comforts have helped the province into fifth place, just four points off table-toppers, Leinster.

After Thursday's re-arranged tie, the holders then host the Glasgow Warriors at Thomond Park on Friday, March 26, before locking horns with table toppers Leinster a week later. With six series of games to go in the regular season, those three home fixtures will go a long way towards determining whether Munster are involved at the business end of the league.

While Munster tripped up 22-31 at Newport Gwent Dragons last time out, Scarlets were 25-8 winners at home to Ulster. But the Welsh side bring a poor record to Cork.

Munster have won the last eight clashes against the Scarlets in all competitions since the Scarlets' 24-15 victory in the quarter-final of the Heineken Cup in March 2007.

Indeed the Welsh side have won just once before on Munster soil - a 19-12 win at Thomond Park in 2003.

This Monday evening Munster announced their squad for Thursday's clash.

It was also confirmed that all tickets for the January match are still valid and new tickets are still available to purchase on line at www.munsterrugby.ie.

The Munster squad includes Tommy O'Donnell who was forced out of the game against the Dragons through injury.

Munster squad: C O'Boyle, D Hurley, D Howlett, I Dowling, T Gleeson, J de Villiers, J Manning, S Deasy, P Warwick, D Williams, P Stringer, M Horan, D Ryan, S Archer, J Brugnaut, D Varley, D Fogarty, M O'Driscoll, I Nagle, B Holland, A Quinlan, N Ronan, N Williams, J Coughlan, T O'Donnell.

Meanwhile Young Munster are this week preparing for a Munster Senior Cup final clash with UCC. That decider will take place on Sunday in Musgrave Park - 2.30pm.

Young Munster have not won the Munster Senior Cup since 1990 - 20 years ago they beat UCC in the final.
