Limerick DL made a shock exit from this season’s Oscar Traynor tournament when they lost 3-2 after penalties to Roscommon on Sunday afternoon.

Limerick travelled west as unbackable favourites but it proved one of those days as the home side scored with virtually their only chance of the game then withstood whatever Limerick could throw at them.

Unfortunately Limerick were bereft of ideas on the day and in the end paid the price.

Defeat in last season’s final gave Limerick the incentive they needed for this campaign and manager Aidan Ryan had all the preparation work done in advance but the ignition was missing.

A missed penalty and an early injury to Shane Clarke did not help Limerick’s cause but they still had enough chances to win the game.

The home side took the lead after eight minutes when Limerick failed to deal properly with a Liam Lynch corner kick and Colm Killachy pounced to fire home.

Ten minutes later a good effort from Mike O’Gorman rattled the woodwork and bounced just out of reach of the inrunning Alan Barry.

When Shane Waters was taken down in the box on the half hour mark it gave Conor Kavanagh the chance to level from the spot but the normally reliable Pike man had his effort well saved by Aidan Fallon in the Roscommon goal.

With the first half coming to a close a good move involving Colbert, Waters and O’Gorman presented the chance for Barry to equalise.

Limerick failed to turn the screw in the second half despite having a number of good chances. Fallon made saves to deny Colbert and Jon Grant on a couple of occasions.

Extra time followed and thereafter penalty kicks where Fallon was the hero saving two of the Limerick kicks to send his side through to the semi finals.

Limerick DL - Gary Neville, Wayne Colbert, Jake Mulcahy, Pat Mullins, Brian Buckley, Shane Waters, Conor Kavanagh, Mike O’Gorman, Pat Boyle, Shane Clarke, Alan Barry, Reserves, Jonathon Grant, Keith Harnett
