Kerr among the names for Limerick FC job
Brian Kerr is among those shortlisted to take over the vacant Limerick FC manager's position
FORMER Republic of Ireland manager Brian Kerr, along with former internationals Kenny Cunningham and Jason McAteer, are among the names shortlisted for the Limerick FC manager’s position.
But team captain Pat Purcell has urged the club to appoint “the right man” for the job rather than going for a “big name”.
“I don’t think it’s about getting a big name,” he said. “It’s about getting the right man for the job for Limerick.
“I think it’s important that we get someone who knows the league, knows the players and has a good record of success.
“It’s a very exciting time to be involved with the club, especially with the news that we could be playing our home games in Thomond Park. I think it could really capture the people’s imagination but it’s important that we get the appointment right and do what is right to make Limerick a sucessful Premier League team.”
The manager’s position has been vacant since Pat Scully was sacked almost two weeks ago, despite leading the club to automatic promotion.
Roddy Collins, who was the first to express an interest in the job, has since been appointed as the new boss at Athlone Town.
And while a club source has confirmed to the Limerick Leader that Kerr, Cunningham and McAteer have been shortlisted for the position, Purcell says that the most important thing is to get the right structures in place so that Limerick can remain in the top flight.
“From a club perspective we’ve been too long outside the Premier Division but the people in the club know what they are doing and I’m sure they will get the right man for the job.
“There’s no point in doing something that will make Limerick successful for a year or two, they need to ensure that whatever the club does is sustainable.”
Purcell, who is negotiating a new contract at the moment, is really looking forward to being part of Limerick’s new challenge.
“Obviously we have played the Premier teams in pre-season games and in cup competitions but it will be brilliant to be playing them week in and week out. It will be a big step up but it’s something that the club is well able for.”
