Munsters remain in title hunt

YOUNG Munster maintained their All-ireland League title hopes thanks to a gritty 21-15 victory over Garryowen at Tom Clifford Park.
The 1993 All-Ireland winners are third in the 1A table, just two points behind Clontarf and St Mary’s College who occupy the top two positions.
Two second half tries from centre Andrew Burke proved crucial in Young Munster’s win. next up for Mike Prendergast’s side is an away game againste Old Belvedere on Saturday, March 3. Garryowen claimed a losing bonus point from their trip to Greenfields, but there are real signs of improvement in the ‘light blues’ side. Ian Hanley and replacement Alan Guaghan scored tries for Paul Cunningham’s team.
Sixth-placed Garryowne travel to Thomond Park to face a struggling Shannon side in their next fixture on Friday, march 2 at 7.30pm.
Shannon are just three points above the relegation zone as a result of their 24-12 defeat to St Mary’s College at Templeville Road.
In Division 1B, Bruff had boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation after recording a gritty 20-16 victory over local rivals UL-Bohemian. The victory moved Bruff outside of the drop zone, one point ahead of Galwegians although the Conacht side has a game in hand.
The defeat is a major setback to UL-Bohs’ promotion hopes. The Annacotty club now sit eight points off a promotion play-off spot.
Meanwhile, Old Crescent took a giant step towards securing their Division 2A status for next season when recording a precious 18-13 away victory over Clonaklilty. However, Thomond remain in danger of making the drop to 2B after suffering a disappointing 37-13 home defeat to City of Derry.
