MUNSTER’S scheduled RaboDirect PRO12 clash with Aironi at the Stadio Zaffanella on Sunday has been postponed due to the cold snap which is gripping Italy at present.

The postponement has also resulted in Munster being forced to cancel a week-long training camp in Parma. Munster had been due to fly to Italy on Saturday and spend a week there before they faced Benetton Treviso in another PRO12 tie at the Stadio di Monigo on Saturday week, February 18.

As of now, the fixture with Treviso is set to go ahead, but Munster will continue to monitor the weather in Italy in the coming days.

A Munster spokesman said Aironi had informed the province that temperatures were currently -8 degrees in that part of Italy and they were expected to plummet further to -11 degrees over the weekend. As a result, it was decided to postpone the fixture.

“We were informed by Aironi that because of the freezing temperatures in Italy at present and the forecast for them to drop further up to the weekend, it was better that a decision to postpone the game was made,” said the Munster spokesman.

“We had a training camp planned to take place in Parma next week, but those plans have now been shelved. The PRO12 organisers will be coming back to us shortly with a new date for the fixture with Aironi.”

The re-fixing of the Aironi clash adds to Munster’s already hectic playing schedule. Following Saturday week’s scheduled PRO12 tie with Treviso, Munster are due to face Cardiff Blues at Thomond Park six days later and the Newport Gwent Dragons on Saturday, March 3.

The next ‘free’ weekend in Munster’s calendar is Saturday, March 10, the same weekend as Ireland host Italy in the Six Nations Championship at the Aviva Stadium.
