Munster must be more ruthless, says Penney

MUNSTER head coach Rob Penney believes his charges must develop a more ruthless streak ahead of key RaboDirect PRO12 and Heineken Cup fixtures.

Munster moved up to third place in the PRO12 table as a result of ending Ulster’s unbeaten record in the PRO12 this season at Thomond Park last weekend.

Penney’s charges face Cardiff in another key PRO12 clash at Musgrave Park this Saturday (7.30pm), before the focus switches to the final two Heineken Cup pool matches later in the month.

Former Canterbury coach Penney feels his side need to be more clinical when in command of games, a point highlighted in their inability to secure a bonus point against Ulster despite having half an hour to gain a fourth try.

“I would like to think by now that we would be a little more - use the word ‘ruthless’ if you like - around our ability to complete when we have pressure on foot on the throat, and be a bit more ruthless,” Penney said.

“The Ulster game was like the best of us and the worst of us all tied up in the same match at times.”

Munster have won each of their last five games with Cardiff, stretching back to May 2010, while the Blues have not won on Munster soil since October, 2007. Munster trail the second-placed Scarlets - who current hold home advantage for the PRO12 semi-final play-offs by a single point. However, Munster’s advantage over sixth-placed Leinster is just two points.

Tickets are available to buy for this game online at www.munsterrugby.ie, by dropping into the Munster Rugby ticket office in Thomond Park or by calling 061-421103.
