Glenstal Abbey fell to an agonising 5-3 loss to Rockwell College in the Munster Schools Senior Cup Round 1 game in Clanwilliam on Wednesday.

Rockwell’s win means the quarter-final lineup is now confirmed. They will play Castletroy College in the knockout last eight game with the winners meeting the winners of CBC and Crescent.

St Munchin’s will meet Ardscoil in one quarter-final with the winners meeting PBC or Glenstal in the other semi-final. The quarter-finals are fixed for February 21/22/23.

A well struck penalty attempt from Glenstal out-half Luke Bradley from 35 metres in added time fell a matter of inches short of the Rockwell posts, before being cleared to safety.

It was tough luck on a gallant Glenstal side, especially for the likes of Bradley, Rossa Dooley, Tom Ryan, I n Kenny and full-back Sean Gleeson, who excelled all through.

Glenstal Abbey will get another opportunity to progress to the semi-finals through the ‘second chance’ system. However, they face a difficult trip to Cork face PBC the next day out.

Rockwell, featuring eight survivors from their Cup winning side of last March, had to repel some strong early pressure from their opponents in the opening half.

The steady drizzle and slippery underfoot conditions made for plenty of handling errors and a game which was ‘stop start’ in nature.

The Tipperary side took the lead mid-way through the opening half when a delightful cross-field kick from out-half Aidan Moynihan was fielded by winger Steve McMahon who ran in for the game’s opening try.

To their credit, resilient Glenstal hit back immediately. Rockwell failed to deal with the re-start and from a penalty award soon after, their excellent out-half Luke Bradley reduced the holders lead to 5-3.

The score remained unchanged until half-time and through the second half.

A minute’s silence was observed before kick-off as a mark of respect to the late Br Matthew Corkery, of Glenstal Abbey, who passed away recently.
