Rebels stand in the way of Limerick footballers in All-Ireland qualifiers

FOR the fifth year in succession the Limerick and Cork senior footballers are meet in championship action.

Last evening, the Munster rivals were drawn to face each other in round four of the All-Ireland Qualifiers.

The game will take place next weekend and Limerick GAA have offered a toss of a coin to decide the venue.

Under GAA rules, fourth round Qualifiers are to be played at neutral venues but Limerick County Board officials would like the game to be played at either the Gaelic Grounds or in Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

"We have a home and away arrangement for all Munster championship games with Cork but that deal doesn't include the qualifiers. We would be happy to toss a coin rather that play the game at a neutral venue. But we will have to wait and see what Croke Park and Cork say to that request," explained Limerick GAA Secretary Mike O'Riordan.

If Cork and Croke Park don't agree to Limerick's proposal, Mickey Ned O'Sullivan's team could be off to Semple Stadium in Thurles or Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney for a game that is most likely to take place on Saturday evening.

The date, time and venue for all the qualifiers will be confirmed this Monday lunch-time at a meeting of the CCCC in Croke Park.

Limerick have met Cork every year since Mickey Ned became Shannonside manager and to date, The Rebels have won all four encounters.

Limerick are bidding to reach the All-Ireland quarter-finals for the first time ever - a win next weekend would secure a last eight clash against either Tyrone, Meath or Roscommon.

Last July Cork were 2-6 to 0-11 winners when the sides met in the Munster final.

Conor Counihan's Cork are likely to show up to six changes from that team, while Limerick could have three of their own from 12 months ago.

Elsewhere in the Qualifiers, Louth, after the heartache of losing the Leinster final, have been drawn to face Dublin.

Monaghan will have to dust themselves down quickly after their Ulster final capitulation with Kildare awaiting them, while Sligo narrowly edged out by Roscommon in the Connacht decider, will face Down.
