Nine nominees put forward for Limerick hurling manager job
JUSTIN McCarthy is one of nine people nominated to manage the Limerick senior hurlers in 2011.
McCarthy didn't make his intentions known when his two year term in charge of Limerick ended two weeks ago with the All-Ireland qualifier defeat to Offaly, but he is now the standout name on the list of nine possible managers for the new season.
The names of all those nominated by the clubs of Limerick have been forwarded to the three-man Independent Appointments Committee.
However, that committee of Damien Quigley, Paudie Fitzmaurice and Jim Woulfe have the power to source their own manager, outside of those nominated by the clubs.
The trio are now to undertake interviews and make a recommendation to the officers of Limerick County Board.
Their is no time limit to their process, but the next meeting of the County Board is scheduled for August 10.
Last Friday was the deadline for the clubs to nominate their preference for the inter-county job and in all 13 different clubs submitted nominations - some candidates received the backing of more than one club.
The clubs were asked to check the intentions of their nominees in advance, but it is not known if all clubs corresponded with their nominees in advance of submitting their names to County Secretary, Mike O'Riordan.
Surprisingly, nominated against Justin McCarthy is John Tuohy, who was a selector alongside McCarthy this season.
Tuohy is one of three Patrickswell men to be nominated - also in the list of nine are Gary Kirby and Ciaran Carey.
It appears that it is Gary Kirby that received the backing of the club.
Kirby was selector/coach in 2007 and 2008 when Richie Bennis was Limerick manager, while Carey is a former manager of the county under-21 and senior camogie sides.
The current Limerick under-21 manager, Leo O'Connor also received a nomination, while another in the list of nominees is Val Murnane, who won All-Ireland minor and under-21 titles as a player with Limerick in the mid-1980s.
Former Limerick hurling captain TJ Ryan is another on the list. The Garryspillane man only retired from playing with Limerick in 2006 after 12 years with the county senior team. He played in both All-Ireland finals of the mid-90s.
The two remaining nominees could be seen as surprises. The first is former Limerick manager Dave Keane.
Keane was at the helm of the Limerick under-21 sides that won three memorable All-Ireland titles at the start of the last decade.
He was elevated to the role of Limerick senior manager in 2003, but his ill-feted reign lasted just one season.
Perhaps the most interesting of the nine nominee is John Allen - he managed his native Cork for two years, leading them to the 2005
All-Ireland title.
Elsewhere, the line-up for the quarter-finals of the Limerick's Live 95FM sponsored county senior hurling championship have been confirmed.
The last eight pairings see a repeat of last year's county final with champions Adare meeting Na Piarsaigh.
Patrickswell meet Knockainey, Kilmallock played Granagh-Ballingarry and Murroe-Boher face divisional side, Emmets.
All quarter-final games will take place on the weekend of August 7/8.
In the newly created County Cup, Claughaun will play South Liberties, Ahane face Croom, Bruff play Garryspillane and Bruree play Doon.
