Munster name team for Gloucester clash
THE exciting Johne Murphy will make his debut for Munster in their pre-season clash with Gloucester at Musgrave Park this Friday night (7pm).
Twenty five-year-old Murphy joined Tony McGahan's squad during the summer from the Leicester Tigers on a two-year contract.
Limerick-based Murphy featured for Ireland in their summer fixtures against the Barbarians at Thomond Park and against the New Zealand Maori.
Johne Murphy made his debut for the Leicester Tigers in September 2006 against Harlequins at The Stoop and after 19 appearances ended the season with a call up to the Ireland Churchill Cup squad.
Commenting on Murphy's arrival at Munster, coach Tony McGahan said the province was delighted to sign a young ambitious Irish outside back such as Johne.
"After being part of a very successful period with Leicester we look forward to Johne's participation on and off the field with Munster," Tony McGahan enthused.
"His strong ball carrying , strong individual defence and finishing ability from either wing or fullback are some of the attributes we are looking forward to Johne bringing to the backline division."
Also included in Munster's 27 strong squad announced for Friday night's clash with Gloucester for the first time this season are Doug Howlett, Peter Stringer, Mick O'Driscoll, Alan Quinlan, Niall Ronan, Tony Buckley and Damien Varley.
It will be Munster's final game before the competitive season begins with the opening round Magners League fixture against Italian newcomers Aironi Rugby at Musgrave Park on Saturday, September 4.
