Move made against McCarthy

FOLLOWING Tuesday night's County Board meeting Garryspillane are the first club to submit a letter to secretary Mike O'Riordan requesting a special County Board meeting.

Although a motion of no confidence in Justin McCarthy was not tabled at Tuesday night's meeting in Claughaun the County Board, through Liam Lenihan, did suggest that if five clubs wrote to secretary Mike O'Riordan a special County Board meeting could be then arranged to discuss and vote on the contentious issue.

Only at that meeting would delegates get an opportunity to overturn December's decision to retain the services of the Cork man.

"Everybody knows where I stand and from the word go I've been consistent all the way through. So have the officers," Liam Lenihan explained.

"The clubs, maybe, have a different opinion. If they want to go away now and put down a motion for change they can do so. If five clubs want to, once they give ample notice to the secretary, they can have their meeting. There's been enough talking now. Everyone knows where they stand."

Secretary Mike O'Riordan confirmed on Thursday morning that he had received a letter concerning the matter from Garryspillane GAA club.

Garryspillane chairman Jim Dooley also confirmed the existence of the letter while he also expressed his surprise that the County Board had not received several more.

"I'm led to believe that there will be many more letters," Jim Dooley told Leader Sport this Thursday.

"We called for the manager to step down at a meeting last December and we're not going to back down now.

"There are plenty of clubs that feel the way we do and the County Board should be expecting a lot more than just one," Jim Dooley concluded.

The County Board require four more clubs to submit letters requestiing a special delegate meeting to discuss and vote on the viability of Justin McCarthy remaining in charge of the senior hurling team.

County Board secretary Mike O'Riordan is then required to provide all Limerick clubs with five days notice of any impending meeting which suggests that such a delegate meeting could not be convened until Tuesday week at the earliest.

There was a lively discussion at Tuesday night's County Board meeting, but no resolution was reached with the County Board executive adamant that they were standing by the decision made to retain the services of Justin McCarthy following a vote cast on December 17.

Meanwhile chairman Liam Lenihan has completely rejected a players' statement which accused the County Board and Justin McCarthy's management team of pressurising players into making their return to inter-county hurling.

Limerick take on Waterford at Fraher Field, Dungarvan on Sunday (2.30pm).
