Andy Lee left in limbo after world title setback
Andy Lee is in limbo after a world title fight against German Felix Sturm has fallen through
LIMERICK middleweight Andy Lee has suffered more world title fight anguish.
The Castleconnell man pulled out of a St Patrick’s Day bout in New York’s Madison Square Garden in an attempt to secure a world title fight against Germany’s Felix Sturm in April.
However Sturm is now to defend his WBA title against Sebastian Zbik, thus leaving the Limerick man in limbo once more. The former St Francis Boxing Club Olympian has not fought since avenging his only pro-boxing defeat to Brian Vera on October 1 last.
Lee’s promoter Lou DiBella has confirmed that he has now turned to attentions to a possible world title fight with WBC champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
“They were very straight with me and told me all along that Andy was one of two fighters in contention for the fight, and I had a feeling that Zbik was getting it, so it doesn’t surprise me,” explained DiBella of the Sturm decision.
“Now Andy will probably have a keep-busy fight in the interim, while we look for other opportunities. He was the [other] alternative. He didn’t get the fight, but he very well could have. He will keep active and he’ll get a big opportunity this year for sure,” said DiBella.
“Andy Lee is going to have a stay busy fight real soon and he’ll be ready to fight Chavez Jr, whenever Chavez Jr is ready. We’re ready, willing and able to do the Andy Lee fight as soon possible. Let’s get it done,” said DiBella. WBC champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr returned to the ring last Saturday night in San Antonio, Texas, and won a twelve round unanimous decision over Marco Antonio Rubio.
Already June 16 is a possible date for the fight between Lee and Chavez.

Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 02:04 AMas a proud limerick man and a lifelong fight fan, first things first AL agent is a clown, just a two bit agent, but thats as good as AL deserves, when and if he goes into the ring with a genuine quality opponent like he says that he is seeking, HE WILL BE HOSPITALISED, he is not and will not ever be close to that level.....................and in simple terms of tv money AL is not going to make fight fans splurge out 50$ for PPV....AL IS A FANTASTIC SPORTSMAN AND SON OF LIMERICK
