Kilmallock feature in FAI Junior Cup seventh round

WHISPER it, but there is a very real chance that the FAI Junior Cup could return to Limerick this season for the first time in six years.

When Fairview Rangers collected their sixth FAI Junior Cup title in seven years in 2004 (the 'View took national honours in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003 & 2004) no one could have suspected that junior soccer on Shannonside would have to wait so long another title, but, sadly, that has proven the case. This season however five Limerick clubs find themselves in the last 16.

Indeed, Pike Rovers have been installed as 10/3 favourites by Paddy Power bookmakers - Fairview Rangers are priced at 7/2, Regional United at 12/1, Kilmallock at 22/1 and Ballynanty Rovers at 28/1.

The seventh round, with a place in the quarter-finals up for grabs, takes place this weekend.

Competition favourites and District League champions Pike Rovers take on Springfield FC at the Pike Club on Sunday at 2.30pm.

Kilmallock represent the surprise packet in the seventh round, but have earned their place in the junior soccer elite thanks to a fourth round victory over Janesboro, a fifth round win over Cork's Greenwood FC while they beat Grettyard on penalties in the sixth.

Kilmallock will be favourites to beat Castleisland FC on Sunday in Kilmallock (2.30pm), but must pay the Kerry side their due respect.

Fairview Rangers host Crumlin United at the Fairgreen on Sunday (2.30pm). Erris United upset record junior cup winners Fairview in last year's quarter-finals, but boss Jason Purcell will be hopeful, in his second year in charge, of making the jump from competition-winning captain to winning manager.

Unfortunately two Limerick clubs, namely Regional United and Ballynanty Rovers, have been drawn against one another in the seventh round - Regional host Balla in Dooradoyle on Sunday, kick-off 2.30pm.
