Keith Earls derails the English chariot

WINGER Keith Earls shook off the effects of an early morning stomach bug to score his fourth international try in Ireland's dramatic RBS Six Nations Championship victory over England at Twickenham.

Twenty two-year-old Earls was feeling poorly when he woke up at 5.30am on match day. The Limerickman admitted that he only started to feel well when Saturday's game finally got underway, but Earls ensured his eighth international cap will remain a memorable one as he crossed for a vital 56th minute touchdown.

Keith Earls' Munster team-mate John Hayes became the first Irish player to win 100 caps in Saturday's 20-16 victory.

Meanwhile, while an understrength Shannon side exited the ODM Munster Senior Cup at the hands of UCC at Rosbrien on Saturday, the scheduled second semi-final meeting of Young Munster and Cork Constitution at Musgrave Park was not played.

In a statement issued on Friday the Munster Branch stated: "As a result of injuries and the unavailability of front-row players and concern about health and safety and player welfare, Cork Constitution are unable to field a team to play Young Munster at Musgrave Park in the semi-final of the ODM Munster Senior Cup and the game will now not go ahead as scheduled."

Young Munster, who will be promoted to Division 1A of the AIL if they defeat UCC at the Mardyke this Saturday, will be anxiously awaiting news from the Munster Branch in relation to the ODM Munster Senior Cup.

Munster A moved within touching distance of securing a semi-final place in the inaugural British & Irish Cup after securing a dramatic victory over Neath at The Gnoll on Saturday. Thomond out-half Declan Cusack kicked three penalties and a conversion for the Munster A side.

Victory for Munster A in their final Pool B game at home to Heriot's at Musgrave Park on Friday, March 12 will secure their passage into the last four.

Munster had trailed by 12 points at half-time in Wales on Saturday, but produced a sparkling second half comeback to secure victory.

Munster coach Anthony Foley explained that there were tough questions asked in the visitors' dressing room at half-time.

"We came off second best in every position in the first half and things weren't going our way," Anthony Foley said.

"So there were some home truths at half-time. We asked the players some questions about the standards within this team and what is expected when they pull on the red jersey."

It has been confirmed that Munster's Kiwi winger Doug Howlett will remain with the province until the end of the 2010-11 season at least. The 31-year-old Howlett, who has played 49 games for Munster, has agreed terms for the coming season with an option for a further season.

"Obviously I'm delighted to be remaining on here with Munster," Doug Howlett said.

"Professionally it's been a good move for me and on the personal side my family are enjoying our time here and are very happy to remain for the immediate future.

"With the contract side of things now settled I'm looking forward to what I believe will be a very exciting second part of the season and hoping to play my part in helping Munster achieve success on the field," Doug Howlett added.
