Allis doubt for Limerick’s league final
Limerick hurler Shane Dowling has returned to fitness but there is now a doubt over Conor Allis ahead of Saturday's league final with Clare after he picked up a hand injury last weekend
LIMERICK attacker Conor Allis is in a fitness battle ahead of Saturday’s hurling league final against Clare.
The Croom man sustained a hand injury in the closing exchanges of Sunday’s 3-22 to 0-17 win over Antrim in Belfast.
Allis subsequently required five stitches to a hand injury but an x-ray on Monday morning confirmed that no bone had been damaged.
However with just a six-day turn around the wing forward, who scored eight points against Antrim, is a doubt for the Division 1B final against The Banner.
This Monday afternoon Croke Park officials confirmed that the final is to take place in Limerick’s Gaelic Grounds this Saturday with throw-in at 6.00.
The winner of the Shannonside derby will gain promotion to the top flight for 2013 and also earn a semi-final place in the league proper against All-Ireland champions Kilkenny on April 22.
As well as the Allis injury, Limerick’s manager John Allen is also awaiting an injury up-date on defender Tom Condon.
The corner back is suffering with a wrist injury and was forced off in Belfast at half-time.
Shane Dowling came through the Antrim game unscathed on his return from injury, while his Na Piarsaigh colleague Kevin Downes and Sean Tobin also gained valuable match time in their bid to return to full fitness.
Elsewhere, there is to be no pre-final boost for Limerick with any return of ace attacker Declan Hannon ruled out. The U-21 star has missed the entire league campaign with a groin injury but is not scheduled to return until the end of this month.
“After our poor start to the league, this was a chance to put things right and, by half time, the game was really over. Now we have a chance to get back into Division 1A,” said manager John Allen ahead of the rematch with Davy Fitzgerald’s Clare.
Saturday will be the fourth meeting of Limerick and Clare this season.
In the Waterford Crystal Cup, the sides drew before The Banner won the replay.
Then in the first round of the league, Clare inflicted a humbling 14-point defeat on Limerick.
While Limerick have regrouped to force their way back into contention, Clare arrive in the Gaelic Grounds on an unbeaten run. They were able to field a largely second-string side last weekend against Offaly and should have a full strength side, with the exception of long term absentees; Pat Vaughan and Darach Honan.
