Conor Niland leads Ireland to cup glory
IRELAND'S Davis Cup team, featuring Limerick's Conor Niland, recorded a stunning 4-1 win against Turkey this past weekend - they now face Lithuania in July and should the Irish win that encounter they will be promoted to Group I of the prestigious tournament.
Ireland were slight underdogs as they faced Turkey in their Group II Europe/Africa zone clash, but began in spectacular fashion on Friday in the Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club when Limerick's Conor Niland annihilated Marsel Ilhan (129th in the world) 6-3, 6-2, 6-1. James McGee then beat Haluk Akkoyun 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 to leave Ireland leading 2-0.
In Saturday's doubles Ireland made it 3-0 when Barry King and James McGee beat the combination of Haluk Akkoyun and Marsel Ilhan 6-3, 6-1, 6-3.
Heading into Sunday's singles Ireland had the tie already secured. On Sunday Barry King took on and beat Baris Erguden 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 while James McGee lost 2-6, 4-6 to Marsel Ilhan.
Conor Niland's victory at the Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club was a real highlight of the weekend's action when the 28-year-old destroyed the Turkish number one Marsel Ilhan, who at 129 in the world is ranked more than 100 places above the Limerick man.
Lithuania beat Great Britain 3-2 in their corresponding tie and if Conor Niland plays in next July's play-off for Ireland he will equal Eoin Casey's record of 26 Davis Cup ties.
