Clubs required to re-submit letters before meeting can be scheduled
A special meeting of the Limerick County Board remains on the horizon, but there will be no movement until after this weekend's round four game in the National Hurling League against Tipperary.
On Tuesday evening Limerick GAA secretary Mike O'Riordan had not received any further correspondence from any of the 68 clubs of the county requesting a meeting to discuss the future of embattled senior hurling manager Justin McCarthy.
Last week five GAA clubs - Adare, Ahane, Croom, Garryspillane and Patrickswell - requested a special meeting of the County Board to discuss the future of McCarthy, but that meeting was not granted by Limerick GAA officials due to a lack of information.
The executive officers of Limerick GAA met over the weekend to discuss the request for a special meeting, but it transpired that further correspondence was required from the clubs before the special meeting could be scheduled.
Late on Saturday night a brief statement was issued by Limerick PRO Helen Cross.
"The Limerick County Board have received correspondence from five clubs requesting a special meeting of the Limerick County Board, however the letters did not propose any motion to be discussed at the proposed meeting.
"The management committee is anxious to progress with the meeting and with this in mind the county secretary has written to all clubs outlining the situation and the required procedure.
"When the notice of motion is received the meeting will be held at the very earliest opportunity.
"The Limerick County Board understand the gravity of the situation and the secretary is available to assist any club in drafting the motion," read the statement.
Attention now turns back to the five clubs in question. They must resubmit a request for the meeting and include a motion for discussion.
If five submissions are received the clubs of the county will be allowed five days notice before the meeting takes place.
Pressure on Justin McCarthy intensified last Sunday when his new-look side suffered their third successive defeat. After the 10-point loss to the Davy Fitzgerald managed Waterford on Sunday Limerick are now bottom of the table and are the only pointless side in division one.
If a motion of no confidence is proposed in the management of Justin McCarthy, a two thirds majority will be required to remove the management.
By my calculation there is a total vote of 138 at county board meetings.
Therefore over 90 votes would be needed to end Justin McCarthy's time at the helm.
Those prepared to battle on with an understrength panel would need over 45 votes to keep Justin McCarthy in charge.
That 45 votes would have a head-start of 13 votes, which would be provided by all the officers of the top table, who have continually reaffirmed their backing for the management.
Ballylanders
Ballylanders GAA club was honoured in Croke Park this week for their 125 Anniversary celebrations.
The south Limerick club were among 16 award winners in the seventh year of the President's Awards.
The GAA President Christy Cooney has lauded the contribution of winners who were drawn from across the full spectrum of the wider GAA family, to include representatives from all four provinces, Camogie, Ladies Football, GAA Rounders, GAA Handball, Scr and the Overseas and Schools sectors.
During 2009 Ballylanders focused on the enormous contribution made by the founder of the club, Frank B Dineen, in the emergence of the GAA.
