All-Limerick FAI final now a real possibility

AN astounding development greeted Limerick soccer fans on Sunday when three District League sides progressed to the semi-finals of the FAI Junior Cup. Indeed, there is now every chance of an historic all-Limerick final.

Pike Rovers traveled to Cooke Park in Tipperary Town on Sunday to take on St. Michael's and justified their favourites tag when they recovered a two-nil deficit to force extra time and then emerge from that titanic encounter on a 4-2 scoreline.

Pike trailed St. Michael's 2-0 at the break, but a stunning second half performance, featuring goals from Colm Enright and Wayne O'Donovan, forced the quarter-final into extra time.

Pike Rovers then took complete control with Colm Carroll making it 3-2 before Eoin Hanrahan sealed a famous win for the Hoops.

In Dooradoyle the ever-improving Regional United saw off Dublin's Shangan Athletic with a superb 2-0 win. Shangan conceded a penalty, which the outstanding Mike Ahern converted, and shipped an early red card in the game. Tommy Butler added the second for Regional United.

In Sunday's third quarter-final Fairview Rangers, who claimed Limerick's last FAI Junior Cup title in 2004, enjoyed a reasonably comfortable 3-0 win over Kilmallock United at the Fairgreen with the goals coming from Christy Doyle, Darren O'Sullivan and Tommy Barrett.

After Pike Rovers' dramatic clash with St. Michael's in Cooke Park the draw was made for the FAI Junior Cup semi-finals.

That draw has pitted Pike Rovers against Clonmel Town on Easter Sunday (April 4) while the clash of Fairview Rangers and Regional United will draw a big crowd to Jackman Park on Easter Saturday, April 3 (7.30pm).

Another highlight of the District League season takes place this Tuesday night when arch-rivals Pike Rovers and Fairview Rangers clash in the Tuohy Cup final at Jackman Park at 7.30pm.

Meanwhile Limerick FC lost 0-1 to Derry City on Friday night last.
