LIMERICK'S Conor Niland finds himself on the brink of making Davis Cup history this week - if the 28-year-old is selected to play for Ireland against Lithuania this weekend Niland will overtake Eoin Casey's record of 26 Davis Cup appearances.
The ambitious Conor Niland, however, will not allow himself to be distracted as the Irish team prepare to take on Lithuania at the Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club (July 9-11) in a Group II Europe/Africa zone clash - Lithuania beat Great Britain 3-2 in the last round and should the Irish win this encounter they will be promoted to Group I of the prestigious tournament.
The Davis Cup tie begins on Friday with two singles matches, a doubles encounter features on Saturday while two more singles matches will be played on Sunday.
The Irish team, ranked 55th in the world, features Conor Niland, Louk Sorensen, James McGee and Barry King.
In March Ireland were slight underdogs when they faced Turkey in the last round, but got off to an ideal start when Conor Niland annihilated Marsel Ilhan (129th in the world) 6-3, 6-2, 6-1.
James McGee then beat Haluk Akkoyun 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 to leave Ireland leading 2-0. In Saturday's doubles Ireland made it 3-0 when Barry King and James McGee beat the combination of Haluk Akkoyun and Marsel Ilhan 6-3, 6-1, 6-3.
Heading into Sunday's singles Ireland had the tie already secured.
On the Sunday Barry King took on and beat Baris Erguden 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 while James McGee lost 2-6, 4-6 to Marsel Ilhan.
The Irish non-playing captain Sean Sorensen will be hoping that Conor Niland can carry his scintillating form this season into this weekend's crucial clash. In November Niland won his fifth ITF Futures title in Florida, he came within a couple of points of qualifying in Doha and also at the Australian Open in Melbourne. He also reached the main draw of the US Men's Claycourt Championships in Houston, surged to 222nd in the world following success on the ATP Challenger Tour in Jersey and then in May Niland won the Israel Open in Ramat Hasharon, collected the winner's cheque for $14,000, over took Louk Sorensen as Irish number one player, broke into the world's top 200 and duly became the second highest-ranked player in the history of Irish tennis after Matt Doyle.
Ireland won their only previous encounter with Lithuania in the Davis Cup. Back in 2007 the Irish side won 2-1 in Cairo.
Conor Niland featured in that clash beating Ricardas Berankis 7-6, 6-0 in the singles. Berankis, Laurynas Grigelis, Dovydas Sakinis and Lukas Mugevicius make up the current Lithuanian team.
