Árdscoil end 17-year drought

Árdscoil Rís brought Limerick's 17-year search for the Dr. Harty Cup title to an end in Nenagh's McDonagh Park today when they saw off Thurles CBS, the defending Munster and All-Ireland champions, with a whopping ten points to spare - 3-15 to 0-14.

Patrickswell Sen O'Brien (captain), Na Piarsaigh's Mark Ryan, Patrickswell's Mark Carmody, Kevin Downes (Na Piarsaigh) and Brendan O'Connor (Croagh-Kilfinny) all enjoyed outstanding outings as rdscoil Rs overwhelmed Thurles CBS in a second replay of the Munster final.

Goals from Kevin Downes and Brendan O'Connor helped rdscoil Rs into a 2-7 to 0-8 interval lead before Mark Ryan's second half three-pointer sent the Limerick school well on its way.

Speaking to Leader Sport in the wake of rdscoil Rs' magnificent victory manager Derek Larkin said: "Oh, it's just unbelievable. Yeah, it was at the third time of asking. It took a lot to get here, but by God these lads have served their apprenticeship down through the years.

"We've been through a lot of finals, Dean Ryan, Rice Cup, White Cup finals you know with more or less the same group of players and they never give up. They always come back. We could have won and lost it in the last two games, but they never gave up. People were saying that we wouldn't win it today, we were missing a very influential half-back in Cathal Mc (McInerney) who has been fantastic for us and they had Aidan McCormack back. A lot of people said we didn't have much hope, but we have full belief in these guys. They have worked so hard and they deserved it, no one deserves it more than these guys."

rdscoil Rs: PJ Hall (Adare), Alan Dempsey (Na Piarsaigh), Eoghan McCarthy (Mungret-St. Paul's), Mark Carmody (Patrickswell), Sen O'Brien (Patrickswell), Declan Hannon (Adare, 0-3, 3 frees), Martin Moroney (Parteen), Niall Kennedy (Granagh-Ballingarry), Mark Ryan (Na Piarsaigh, 1-1), Adrian Breen (Na Piarsaigh, 0-1), Shane Dowling (Na Piarsaigh, 0-1), Brendan O'Connor (Croagh-Kilfinny, 1-2), Jamie Shanahan (Sixmilebridge, 0-2), Kevin Downes (Na Piarsaigh, 1-2), John Fitzgibbon (Adare, 0-3, 2 frees). Subs: Ciarn Keogh (Na Piarsaigh) for Shane Dowling, Kevin Keane (Adare) for Adrian Breen, David Sheppard (Na Piarsaigh) for PJ Hall.
