Ancor performing in St Mary's Cathedral
LIMERICK choir Ancor is preparing to stage its annual Christmas concert in the atmospheric surrounds of St Mary's Cathedral.
The concert, which takes place on the evening of Thursday, December 15, will once again see the award-winning choir delight audiences with Christmas music to suit all tastes.
As well as festive favourites, the programme this year will feature two major works including a German baroque Magnificat by CPE Bach, the son of the famous composer Johan Sebestian Bach.
As well as this, there will be a Christmas cantata by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi.
"We are very lucky to have some really nice soloists singing with us, ,who are all either based in Limerick or have Limerick connections," says choral director Cecilia Madden, "We have Emma English who is a soprano, plus Sarah Ellen Murphy, a mezzo-soprano, and Vladimir Smishkewych, who presents a Sunday morning show on RTE Lyric FM, and would be well-known in classical music circles."
Ancor, which marked its tenth anniversary last year, started out with 13 members, but this has grown steadily to 35 vocalists.
As usual, the audience in St Mary's Cathedral will be served traditional mulled wine and mince pies during the interval, to set the mood for the carols that follow.
Tickets can be purchased from www.ancor.ie, or by calling 061-229956. They may also be available on the night in St Mary's Cathedral.
