Limerick's Rachel is top young filmaker

CASTLECONNELL’s Rachel McGill was a big winner at the recent Fresh Film Festival, taking the top award for young filmmaker of the year.

The 17-year-old was the first female winner of the award, Ireland's Young Filmmaker of the Year 2016, in Fresh’s 20 year history. Her film, Poppies, beat off competition from over 400 other submitted entries, bagging the her a cheque for €1,000 at the festival awards ceremony held recently.

The winning short, set in the 1940s, was inspired by Sylvia Plath's Poppies in July. Rachel will sit her Leaving Cert in June and has applied to study at Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art and Design in September.
